Discovery in the Yucatan

It was an adventure I had been thinking about for many years, exploring the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza on the Mexican Yucatan. My dad, brother, and cousin and I had not all been together in several years. I thought a journey would be a good chance for the four of us to be together, just the boys.

Early in the morning we left the safety and comforts of our hotel on Cozumel Island and began what was to become one I my most memorable adventures I have ever been on.

An eight mile ferry ride started the day and the adventure had truly begun.

While on the ferry, I thought about what I would discover at Chichen Itza. I had researched the site quite a bit and was armed with books, notes and even a compass. The temple of Kulkan, The Observatory, the Great Ball Court, and many other incredible Mayan creations waited.

While filling up the rent car, I thought how the four of us were really on our own.

During the drive from the coast my brother volunteered as navigator, my said he wanted to be camera man, and my dad, well he promised not to yell at any of us.

Heading into the Yucatan jungle I thought how great it was to be with family.

When we arrived at Chichen Itza I hired an English speaking tour guide so we wouldn’t miss anything.

We discovered many magnificent and amazing things that day but one stands out as the greatest of all. What made the trip one of the most memorable days of my life was sharing it with family.
